Keep decorative A1 Mini engraving away from surfaces that will contact food. For a small kitchen gift, choose a clearly separate decorative tag or another non-food-contact area whose material and finish are documented. Do not treat oil or an attractive cleaned surface as proof that an engraved food-contact area is suitable for use.

Mark the intended-use areas before drawing the design
Consider how the owner will actually use and wash the object. A decorative surface on the underside can still contact a worktop or be immersed during cleaning. A handle can be grasped with wet hands. A detachable gift tag avoids some direct contact questions, but its material and placement still matter.
Use a paper sketch to label the food-contact region, the grip region, the fixing points and any proposed decorative area. If the design crosses between them, relocate it before preparing the laser file. Do not rely on a tiny “decorative only” note to override the obvious use of an everyday utensil.

Separate decoration approval from product-use approval
The recipient may like the lettering without knowing the material's intended use. Keep supplier information for the wooden item and its finish. If you cannot establish that information, choose a documented alternative rather than inventing a cleaning or sealing procedure.
A sample can show legibility and placement. It cannot certify the assembled gift for food use. Avoid claims such as dishwasher-safe, hygienic or food-safe unless supported for the exact finished item through the appropriate evidence. Engraving an eligible wood sample only qualifies the observed engraving result.
If a small handle is being considered, the handle-hole clearance example addresses geometry around the fixing region. It does not replace the intended-use decision. A visually clear mark can still be in the wrong place for how the item will be handled.
A1 Mini fit and the separate-tag option
The A1 Mini work area is listed as 120 × 130 mm. Check the actual tag or component and its support against the approved setup. That dimension does not establish suitability for an assembled utensil or its finish.
For a decorative tag, select documented laser-compatible stock, produce the mark separately and attach it after the laser operation using an appropriate method. Keep it separate from food during presentation and use. A maker signature under a bowl requires its own flat-foot and access assessment; the presence of a small external area is only the beginning of that decision.
Will applying food-grade oil after engraving solve the contact question?
Do not use the oil label as proof for the modified object. Confirm the complete item's intended use and finishing requirements with its supplier. If that evidence is absent, keep the mark out of the food-contact area.
Can a kitchen-themed gift be decorative only?
Yes, if its design and description make that use clear. A separate display plaque or removable presentation tag is easier to distinguish from a cooking surface than decoration placed where food would normally touch.
