Start with the decision, not a setting
A July 21 leather engraver asked whether wax is required after engraving coasters and described a choice between overall wax and a targeted acrylic leather finish.

Follow the evidence in sequence
- Confirm supplier-documented laser-compatible leather before engraving.
- Reject chrome-tanned, faux/PVC, coated, or unknown leather.
- Apply each finish to a separate same-hide sample exactly as its maker directs.
- Wait the full labeled cure time before comparing appearance and transfer.

Is wax required after engraving?

Can finish hide a weak mark?
A finish may darken or mask a weak mark; it does not repair missing contrast or unstable material.
Does a rub test certify long-term use?
No. A shop rub test compares appearance and transfer only; it is not durability, wash, skin-contact, or food-contact certification.
