Decide how the button will be sewn before placing its engraving. Thread between two holes makes one band across the face; four holes allow several stitch patterns, each hiding a different area. Put the actual thread on a paper proof and keep important letters outside its path.
The wooden button patterns on Atomm include two-hole and four-hole designs. Those openings make the finished sewn appearance a useful check before personalization. They do not establish a TYVOK setting or a washable finish.
Draw the stitches on the finished face
Ask for the intended stitch arrangement: two parallel bars, a cross, or another pattern. A button maker should not select a clear corner for a monogram and then discover that the customer prefers a diagonal cross over it. Mark the top of the garment on the proof so the button does not rotate between approval and sewing.
Use a spare unprocessed button, the intended thread and a piece of scrap fabric. Sew it normally, then photograph it straight on. Compare the visible area with the engraving layout at actual size. Thick yarn, several thread passes and a raised thread bundle can hide more than a single line drawn on screen.

Personalize the loose button
Remove all thread before laser processing. Use a precut wooden blank whose complete material and finish are confirmed suitable, then make the first mark on a spare. Do not use a garment as the support or engrave an already sewn button in place. The distinction between preparing a decoration and attaching it also matters with sew-on hat patches.

After the engraved sample cools and is cleaned, sew it with the same pattern used for approval. Inspect the result from normal viewing distance. Keep that example with the order details, including thread thickness and stitch direction. Can I engrave beneath where the thread will sit?
Decorative texture may be hidden there, but avoid relying on that area for a name or size label. Do not deepen the mark to make it visible through thread or weaken the wood between holes.
Does a four-hole button always leave more room for initials?
No. Hole positions, button diameter and stitch arrangement decide the remaining space. Compare actual-size sewn samples rather than counting the holes alone.
