The fastest way to improve a first photo engraving is to stop treating the photograph as one continuous image. Make a small proof with three bands: shadows, midtones, and highlights. The proof shows whether the file preserves facial detail before a full blank is used. It does not create universal settings; it creates evidence for one identified material and surface.

Build the three-tone file

Start with a clean, high-resolution grayscale image. Crop to the final aspect ratio, remove distracting background detail, and resize before sharpening. Duplicate a representative area—an eye, hair, cheek, and light clothing work well—into three adjacent bands.

Clipping means pushing tones beyond the printable range. Black clipping merges different dark pixels into solid black; white clipping removes pale detail. Watch the histogram while setting black and white points, and avoid cutting off either end unless the image intentionally contains pure black or white.

Choose and compare dithering

A blue-diode laser cannot reproduce gray ink. Photo software normally converts gray values into patterns of engraved and unengraved dots. That conversion is dithering. Jarvis or Stucki-style patterns often preserve gradual faces; ordered patterns can give graphic textures. Names and controls vary by software, so use the preview and current software documentation.

Make the three bands with one dithering method first. If the midtone is muddy, create a second tiny proof with only the dithering method changed. Do not change contrast, scale, speed, power, focus, and material simultaneously.

  1. Confirm the supplier-identified material is allowed by current TYVOK guidance.
  2. Focus and frame according to the current A1 Mini instructions.
  3. Use a small offcut from the same lot and finish.
  4. Keep ventilation running and the machine attended.
  5. Label the proof with file name, material, date, and settings.
  6. Judge it at normal viewing distance and under ordinary light.

Choose the band that keeps important shadow detail, readable midtones, and visible highlights. A darker result is not automatically a better photo. Keep the proof beside the finished job record so a later material lot can be compared.
