Case Series: The Story Behind Our Iron Man Project with Tyvok Spider S1
Many of us have watched Iron Man movies or seen the posters, and some may even have read the comic books. Our initial idea was to fill an entire room with this kind of black-and-white comic-style artwork, creating an atmosphere with alternating shades that would look stunning. However, this required a large scale and high precision.
For this project, we used the Tyvok Spider S1 laser engraver. We initially planned three pieces, each around 2000x1300mm in size. During the actual engraving process, we discovered that one piece alone took nearly 72 hours to complete due to the large size and the high precision we chose for the engraving on aluminum-plastic panels. This was also a great test for the Spider S1’s durability, as it performed very stably during these long operating hours, which was one of our main objectives. Besides continuous aging tests, we wanted to push the machine to its limits to uncover any potential issues during extended use.
The Spider S1 proved to be extremely reliable. It ran continuously for such long periods without any problems, reinforcing our confidence in its capacity for large-scale, high-detail projects. Once the engraving was complete, it took several colleagues to lift the finished piece due to its size, and even cleaning it post-engraving was a bit of a challenge. We only completed one piece for now, but we plan to gradually create more. These pieces would look fantastic in a theater setting.
The key points of this case were the extended engraving process and the long-duration time-lapse photography, which required frequent battery changes. Other than that, everything went smoothly, showcasing the Spider S1’s capabilities for continuous, large-format work.
We hope this story and project inspire your own creative endeavors!
