When Boolean subtraction removes the opposite shape from the one you expected, check the operation's operand order. In an editor that subtracts the front object from the back object, moving an object in the stacking order can change the result even though neither shape moves on the canvas. Preserve both originals before trying again.
The xTool Boolean tutorial explains subtraction as a top-shape/bottom-shape operation. Other editors can use different selection conventions. Read the rule for your preparation software and test two simple shapes; do not assume that the last clicked object always has the same role everywhere.
Name the piece you want to keep
Consider a decorative tag with a rectangular body and a circular opening. The intended result is the rectangle minus the circle. If the circle is instead the retained operand, the output may be only a crescent or may disappear where the circle is completely contained in the rectangle.
Before touching the command, describe the result in words: “keep the tag body, remove this circle.” That statement is more useful than repeatedly clicking Subtract and trying to decide afterward whether the result looks plausible. The geometry can be technically valid while representing the wrong object.

Use a two-shape rehearsal
Create an ordinary rectangle and an overlapping circle away from the customer artwork. Run the operation, undo it and reverse the documented operand order. Comparing those outcomes makes the editor's rule visible without risking a complicated mark. Delete the rehearsal geometry before exporting the customer file.
Return to a copy of the actual design. If either operand consists of open endpoints, resolve its intended geometry before expecting an area operation to work. Joining open line endpoints addresses a different prerequisite: it does not establish the subtraction order, but an unintended open outline can prevent the intended filled region from existing.
After subtraction, inspect both the opening and the outer edge. A tiny sliver can be hidden at normal zoom. Keep the result as a new version so the removing shape can be changed later without reconstructing it from memory.
Keep artwork subtraction separate from material removal
This is a geometry operation. It does not by itself instruct the laser to cut through the blank. For a P2 personalization workflow, confirm the supported material and intended marking operation separately. A white gap in a displayed logo may simply be an area that will receive no mark.
If the intended result is only the common region shared by two shapes, use the reasoning for Boolean intersection and empty overlap instead. Intersection and subtraction can produce very different designs from exactly the same two starting objects.
Does bringing an object to the front change its physical laser order?
Not necessarily. Drawing stacking order and machine processing order are separate concepts. Confirm the receiving program's layer and output sequence rather than treating a visual front/back arrangement as a job-order setting.
Can I restore the removed circle after saving the result?
Only if you retained an editable original, an appropriate earlier version or an available undo state. Save the source operands before destructive geometry editing. A flattened result is not a reliable archive of every shape that produced it.
