When it comes to crafting large, intricate projects, the Tyvok Spider S1 laser engraver stands out for its capabilities. We previously worked on stacked art using the X1S, which allowed us to create multi-layered designs efficiently. By setting the dimensions once, we could complete an entire piece in one go, saving both time and materials—especially when juggling other tasks. This time, however, we aimed for something even bigger.
With the Tyvok Spider S1, we took on the challenge of creating a large-scale stacked artwork, pushing the limits to 12 layers. This approach not only enriches the overall detail but also allows for more versatility when displaying the piece in different locations or contexts. Larger dimensions also make the final piece more impactful, and with more layers, the finer details really shine through.
The cutting process for the 12-layer project took about three days, and the final size came out to an impressive 1800x1200mm (approximately 5.9 x 3.9 feet). Despite the complexity, everything went smoothly—the laser cuts were flawless, with no issues encountered during the process. After cutting, the work wasn’t finished; we needed to color each layer, glue them together, and apply pressure to ensure a firm bond. This step took time, as each layer had to be glued and compressed sequentially.
The project highlighted the advantages of using a high-power, large-format laser engraver like the Tyvok Spider S1, especially for tasks requiring precision and scalability. The final product was not only visually stunning but also large enough to make a significant impact when displayed on the wall. Two team members were required to lift and position the piece, which speaks to its scale.
However, such large projects do come with challenges. The materials and time required were substantial, and given the size, shipping could be costly—making this type of project best suited for custom orders and local delivery. Still, the results were worth it, and we’ve documented the entire process to showcase how the Tyvok Spider S1 can handle large-scale, detailed artwork.
We hope this project inspires others to explore the full potential of the Tyvok Spider S1, especially for creative and large-format applications.
