Sand Before or After Assembling a Laser-Cut Box?

Deal with surfaces that become inaccessible before you glue a small box together. Leave mating tabs and engraved details alone until a representative test shows that the chosen treatment preserves fit and appearance. Sanding every face automatically can create more problems than it solves.

In a recent beginner discussion about assembling laser-cut plywood, the builder wished the pieces had been sanded before assembly. The useful lesson is about access: a flat panel is easy to inspect, whereas the same face at the bottom of a narrow box may be hard to reach.

Divide the surfaces by what happens at glue-up

Dry assemble the box and look into it from above. Identify the inner corners, underside of a shelf, recess behind a divider, and any face that a lid mechanism will obscure. Mark those locations on a paper diagram rather than writing on the finished wood.

Next, separate cosmetic faces from joining features. Removing material from a visible panel and removing material from a tab are different operations. A tab that fitted well before treatment can become loose afterward. A shallow engraving can lose contrast or fine strokes even when the adjacent blank area looks better.

A divider makes the order visible

Imagine a small open box containing a central divider. Before assembly, both sides of that divider lie flat on the bench. After bonding, one narrow compartment prevents a sanding block from reaching the bottom evenly.

Use an offcut from the same known sheet to evaluate the treatment recommended for the stock and finish. If the appearance is acceptable, treat the intended interior faces while the pieces remain separate. Keep dimensional features protected, remove residue using an appropriate method, and repeat the dry fit before glue-up. Record which faces were treated so the opposite side of the divider is not overlooked.

This is not a requirement to sand all laser residue away. Different surfaces, coatings, and finishes need different handling. Work with suitable dust control and supplier guidance; avoid introducing an unknown cleaning chemical just to speed up assembly.

Small access problems differ from large sanding bills

The A1 Mini product page lists a 120 × 130mm working area for its compact blue-diode workflow. Use eligible individual parts that fit the confirmed setup; a box fitting on a desk does not prove every panel fits the machine.

For a large sign, timing dirty-edge sanding on a sample helps estimate labor across many edges. The small-box decision here is instead whether those edges and faces remain reachable. If someone else will assemble the kit, put the finishing step before glue-up and test that wording through a first-builder instruction trial.

Before making the treatment irreversible

Can sanding ruin shallow engraved text?

Yes. Abrasion can change the surface and weaken fine detail. Test a representative engraved scrap first, keeping an untreated example beside it to judge readability rather than relying on memory.

Should I apply the final finish before gluing the box?

That depends on the finish and adhesive. A finish can interfere with bonding, so follow both suppliers' instructions and plan protected bonding areas where required. Accessibility alone does not establish compatibility.
