Trim Pattern Lines Without Rejoining the Segments

Use Trim Shapes with its temporary no-join modifier when you want to remove a segment while leaving the remaining paths separate. In current LightBurn documentation, hold Ctrl on Windows or Cmd on macOS while clicking with Trim Shapes. This controls that operation; it is not a machine setting or a promise of a global auto-join switch.

An April 2026 geometric-pattern maker's question describes the real problem: removing selected lines from an offset pattern caused remaining segments to join again. Large X1S 2026 artwork benefits from resolving that structure before repeating the pattern across a panel.

Test one intersection before editing the panel

Duplicate a small section containing the troublesome crossing. Preserve the untouched original. Activate Trim Shapes and hover over the segment: inspect exactly what is highlighted before clicking. The official tool instructions explain that a shape without an intersection can be deleted entirely, so a visually nearby line is not enough.

Make two copies of the same intersection. Trim the first normally and the second with the no-join modifier. Select the resulting pieces individually and compare where each path begins and ends. The visible linework may look identical even when one result is a connected path and the other contains separate pieces.

Consider a decorative lattice with a border and three crossing lines. If the intended result retains two separate engraving strokes but creates one closed cutout, those are three different geometry decisions. Do not run Break Apart over the entire panel merely to remove one unwanted edge; that can create more pieces to reconcile than the original problem required.

If a retained contour must be closed, use the appropriate endpoint-joining workflow afterward. Deliberately open engraving lines do not need to be welded into closed areas. Once geometry is settled, check that nesting preserves inner cutouts before arranging repeated panel parts.

Release the pattern only after checking scale

The X1S 2026 page describes an 800 × 800 mm starting area with an 800 × 2000 mm expansion path, while retaining launch-specification caveats. Verify the actual machine and supported software setup before output. A large workspace increases the consequence of repeating an editing error; it does not validate the strength of the remaining material webs or establish any universal cutting setting.

Why does the whole shape disappear when I trim one edge?

The tool may not find an actual intersection, or the highlighted object may be more extensive than expected. Undo, inspect the hover preview and verify the geometry before another click.

Does leaving paths open stop them from engraving?

An open vector can be valid for a line-marking operation. Filling an area and releasing a cutout require different geometry. Check the assigned operation and preview instead of closing every path indiscriminately.
