A round blank fits only when its diameter plus left/right and front/back clearances remains inside the usable envelope after clamps, cables, focus hardware and framing margin are deducted from the listed 120 × 130 mm area.

The smaller usable span controls the circle

Small-machine users often find that a blank fitting the listed work area does not prove safe usable travel after workholding.

Observation: a 92 mm coaster fits on paper, but the clamp and cable-side margin reduce usable travel. Controlled calculation: usable X = 120 − left block − right block; usable Y = 130 − front block − back block. Maximum circle diameter is the smaller result. Interpretation compares measured blank diameter with that limit. Action changes fixture or refuses fit.

This is a fit calculation, not permission to use a specific blank. Material composition, extraction and supervision remain separate gates. Measure the production blank itself because seller dimensions can be nominal.

Worked 92 mm blank example

  1. Measure the actual blank diameter at several axes.
  2. Draw every fixture stop and clamp footprint on a paper envelope.
  3. Enter required machine, cable and framing clearances from current guidance.
  4. Calculate both usable spans; use the smaller as the circle limit.
  5. Perform a non-output boundary check before any material test.

Scenario 1: left 8 mm, right 12 mm gives X = 100 mm; front 7 mm, back 9 mm gives Y = 114 mm. Maximum circle = 100 mm, so a measured 92.4 mm blank leaves 7.6 mm total diameter clearance. Scenario 2: a 20 mm right clamp makes X = 92 mm; the 92.4 mm blank fails by 0.4 mm.

Frame without output before release

After the arithmetic, run a non-output boundary check with the actual fixture. Nominal seller diameter and listed work area cannot replace physical clearance.

Questions about nominal area and real clearance

Does a 120 mm circle automatically fit?

No. It leaves no X allowance in the nominal area and may conflict with fixtures or margins.

Can I rotate a circle to gain space?

Rotation does not reduce a true circle's diameter, though an oval blank may change envelope.

Should I use the exact nominal limit?

Manufacturing variation and workholding require measured clearance, not a zero-margin assumption.

The smaller span owns the decision

Record both subtractions and the measured blank diameter. A non-output boundary check confirms the actual fixture before any eligible material is processed.
