Tassel Maker Size: Winding Length Is Not Finished Tassel Length

Calibrate a tassel maker using a finished tassel. The distance used for winding is not a reliable label for the final length because tying the head, releasing tension and trimming the ends all change the result. Make one sample with the intended yarn before engraving size marks on the wooden tool.

The simple tassel-maker project separates wrapping, tying and trimming. Those steps explain why a tool dimension should be checked against the object it produces. There is no single allowance that works for every yarn and tying style.

Choose the points that define the finished size

Decide whether the customer measures from the top of the tassel body or includes a hanging loop. Write that convention beside the paper pattern. A loop added later can make two otherwise identical tassels appear different in overall length without any change to the winding tool.

Wind the intended yarn with repeatable, gentle tension. Use the intended number of wraps, tie the head in its planned position and finish the ends as they will be supplied. Measure after the yarn has relaxed. Repeat once before changing the tool; a large difference between two trials suggests the hand process needs to become more consistent first.

Turn a trial into a useful tool label

Suppose a sample wound on a chosen span produces a 47 mm body after tying and trimming, while the required body is 50 mm. That observed 3 mm shortage is a reason to try a slightly larger winding span, not proof that every future tool needs exactly 3 mm added. Retest with the same yarn and method before marking the new size permanently.

The A1 Mini is suitable for compact tool personalization when the complete wooden part and its support fit its listed 120 × 130 mm area. Use confirmed laser-compatible stock, and keep all yarn off the tool during processing. A file from another machine does not establish cutting settings for the selected A1 Mini head.

Check the bounding dimensions of a rotated drawing if turning the tool seems to make it fit: the outside envelope, not its long edge alone, must clear the work area. After engraving, clean and smooth every yarn-contact surface. For a kumihimo disk, the same yarn choice also affects how firmly its slots hold; keep separate sample notes for each tool's function.

Should the engraved size include the suspension loop?

Only if that is the agreed measurement convention. Mark the tool or its record clearly so the maker knows whether the number describes the tassel body or the full hanging assembly.

Can I use the same size mark after changing from cotton to stretchy yarn?

Retest first. Different stretch, bulk and relaxation can change the finished length even when the winding span and wrap count remain identical.
