LightBurn Nest Selected vs Quick Nest: Check the Task

LightBurn's Nest Selected and Quick Nest are different workflows. Nest Selected exports selected graphics for SVGnest and brings the result back; Quick Nest arranges bounding boxes inside LightBurn. Choose according to the geometry and installed software version rather than expecting both commands to pack irregular parts identically.

A recent request for true nesting shows why the distinction matters to makers. Discussion of future features is not a substitute for the tools documented for the version on your workstation. Do not plan a production sheet around an unverified release date.

Compare the actual placement task

The Nest Selected documentation describes exporting an SVG, processing it through SVGnest and importing the resulting arrangement. Its instructions require the selected parts to begin outside the chosen container. Follow that workflow when evaluating how irregular outlines can fit together.

The Quick Nest documentation describes the built-in option for LightBurn 2.1 or newer. It uses bounding rectangles rather than packing against every contour. Its target rectangle must be aligned with the drawing axes. A crescent-shaped part can therefore leave apparently usable empty space that its rectangular envelope still occupies.

Test with the parts you really sell

Make a copy containing a representative set: the largest part, a difficult concave outline and a piece with interior engraving. Compare arrangements at the same scale and with the same stock boundary. Otherwise, a tighter-looking result may simply have used a larger sheet or rotated a grain-sensitive component.

Do not evaluate the result by occupied area alone. Check that labels still belong to their outlines, left and right versions remain distinguishable, and parts retain the intended orientation. The densest arrangement is not useful if the finished appearance or assembly changes.

For a useful comparison, record which controls were allowed to change between attempts. Keep spacing and orientation requirements constant. Save both layouts before choosing one so the next operator can understand why the selected arrangement was accepted.

Fit the output to the X1S Pro setup

The TYVOK X1S Pro lists an 800 × 2000 mm large-format work area. The usable sheet boundary must still account for your stock, supports and setup. Software packing does not prove that the material lies flat or that every proposed part can be processed safely.

Check the full part count after nesting, then check whether the solver's output assumes a long strip or finite sheets. These are separate acceptance checks after choosing the appropriate tool. Preview the final operations and use a representative sample before committing valuable stock.

Why does Quick Nest leave space inside an L-shaped part?

Its bounding-box approach can reserve the empty corner as part of the rectangular envelope. That is a documented limitation of this arrangement method, not evidence that the laser has a smaller working area.

Does choosing SVGnest guarantee the lowest possible material cost?

No. Compare a complete, usable layout with the actual stock and finishing requirements. Setup time, allowed rotation, spacing and damaged stock regions can outweigh a visually tighter arrangement. Keep the accepted layout and its part count with the job.
