A journal cover that will not remain flat should not be forced into a laser job. Check how the finished book supports the intended marking region, whether opening it changes that support, and whether the whole object fits the machine's approved arrangement. A correctly centered logo can still cross a changing surface height.
An April 21 journal-personalization question asks about clean engraving on premade genuine-leather journals. Physical support is a separate concern from selecting the leather or drawing a margin: the binding, cover and pages move together.
Inspect the book in its natural positions
With the machine inactive, examine the journal closed and in the ordinary open position permitted by its construction. Do not press the spine flat or bend a stiff cover backward. Note where the intended mark lies relative to the page block, hinge and any elastic band, pocket or raised seam.
A cover may appear flat when held by hand but rise as soon as the hand is removed. That is not a supported processing position. The chosen arrangement must hold the relevant surface consistently without manual pressure during operation. If a manufacturer-supported fixture cannot do that, choose a different placement, a different blank or a separate personalization method.

Separate three different measurements
First locate the artwork in the cover's own coordinates. Second check the marking region against the actual machine field. Third follow the approved focusing procedure at the supported surface. Increasing the margin from a hinge cannot, by itself, resolve a cover that changes height.
For example, a small corner monogram may sit over the page block while a wide central design crosses an unsupported region when the book is open. The smaller placement may be feasible, but only if the selected surface and fixture satisfy the machine instructions. The journal band-clearance example addresses another obstacle that can exist even after support is resolved.
Do not substitute folded paper, loose fabric or other improvised combustible packing beneath a laser job. Obtain the appropriate holding method from the equipment guidance. If the desired placement cannot be supported without stressing the book, preserve the journal and decline that placement.
Confirm the actual finished construction
The TYVOK P2 currently lists a 60 × 60mm galvo marking field. That field is not a guarantee of clearance for a thick bound object, nor does the product category approve every leather finish. Standard P2 is a blue-laser system; qualify the exact leather, coating and setup before marking, with the prescribed protective measures and extraction.
For a valuable premade journal, ask for a demonstration on the same finished construction. A flat scrap from a different hide cannot show how this binding behaves. Keep the first approved sample as the loading reference for any later matching books.
Can I hold the cover down while it engraves?
No. Do not use a hand as the fixture during laser operation. Use only a supported arrangement that remains stable on its own within the prescribed protection.
Will moving the logo away from the spine solve the problem?
It may avoid one curved region, but check again. A cover can flex elsewhere, and the new placement still needs consistent support, clearance and focus.
