A placed image may be stored outside the artwork file. If the design moves to another folder or computer without that image, the file can open with an empty space where the picture belonged. Recover the original asset, repair the link and test a self-contained export before preparing the engraving.
A 2026 Illustrator discussion describes trouble with a placed-image preview and updating its link. It supports checking the image dependency, but it does not prove that a missing preview in every application has the same cause.
Check whether the picture is missing or merely hidden
Open the source file and inspect its linked-assets information. Look for an unavailable path, renamed image or warning. Also check whether the image layer is visible; a hidden layer is a separate condition from a broken dependency.
Find the intended original rather than substituting a similarly named picture. Compare its subject, crop and pixel dimensions. If several revisions exist, confirm the right one with the owner before reconnecting it. A link that loads successfully can still point to the wrong artwork.
Make a copy that travels reliably
| Step | File to preserve or create | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Recover | Original artwork and original image | Correct revision and complete image |
| Relink | Editable working copy | Crop, orientation and placement |
| Embed or export | Supported delivery copy | Image remains present after reopening |
| Transfer test | Copy in a separate location | No dependency on the old asset path |
Keep backups before testing the dependency. On a duplicate set, temporarily make the original asset unavailable and reopen the delivery file; restore the working arrangement afterward. Do not delete the only original to prove that an export is self-contained.
Some receiving programs support an image directly but not an embedded image inside every SVG construction. If necessary, use the documented native image-import path and recheck physical size and placement. Embedding solves storage dependency; it does not promise universal format compatibility.
Review the rest of the small composition
After the picture is visible, inspect layer colors and intended operations so a correct photo does not conceal an incorrectly assigned border or name. If the damaged element is a vector rather than a missing picture, compare clipboard transfer with saved-file import instead.
The A1 Mini's compact format is appropriate for small artwork layouts only within its confirmed setup and material limits. Bringing an image back into the file is a preparation step. Confirm the selected software connection and approve a sample on the actual eligible surface before committing an irreplaceable gift.
Is an embedded picture always better than a linked one?
An embedded delivery copy is easier to move, while linked images can be convenient during editing. Keep the editable project organized and verify whichever export the receiving application supports.
The image appears, but it is blurrier than before. Is the link fixed?
The dependency may be fixed while a lower-resolution or wrong revision has been selected. Compare the actual asset with the original and reopen the export at the intended physical dimensions before accepting it.
