Photograph and grid the sheet before nesting. Reserve clear, stable regions for visible faces and critical joints; assign only documented, acceptable defects to concealed noncritical pieces.

Grade the sheet before packing the nest

Large sheets may contain knots, patches, discoloration, or void evidence that affect visible faces differently from concealed components.

Observation: a sheet has two patched regions, one dark knot, and edge delamination. Controlled test: photograph a numbered grid and assign every part a visible, hidden, joint-critical, or sacrificial role before nesting. Interpretation: a cosmetic patch may be acceptable on a hidden face, while delamination blocks a structural joint regardless of visibility. Action: reserve grade-A cells and exclude uncertain cells.

Visible, hidden, and critical are different labels

Do not let nesting efficiency consume all presentation-grade area. Yield is accepted parts, not simply maximum packed area.

Example grid assignment for one sign set

  1. Mark sheet ID, supplier lot, face side and orientation.
  2. Photograph square-on with a scale and overlay a numbered grid.
  3. Circle knots, patches, stains, edge damage and suspect void clues.
  4. Tag each part in the nest as visible, hidden, joint-critical or sacrificial.
  5. Review the final layout against the physical sheet before output.

For one sign set, assign front letters to A2–A5, concealed spacers to B1–B3, and no part to D1 where the edge separates. Overlay part IDs on the source photo. When the nest moves, update both the software layout and physical sheet marks.

Accepted yield beats packed area

Report accepted yield, not packed area. A tightly packed sheet that sends a knot through the customer-facing word has poor yield even if little wood remains.

Questions about knots, patches, and hidden faces

Can a knot go on the back of any part?

Not if it affects flatness, cutting, a joint, or structural use. Hidden does not mean harmless.

Does software detect internal voids?

A surface map cannot prove the internal core. Retained coupons and supplier quality still matter.

Should offcuts keep the original sheet ID?

Yes. Traceability remains useful when an offcut becomes future job stock.

Protect presentation-grade area

Save the photographed grid with the final nest. Accepted customer-facing parts—not maximum packed area—are the yield that matters.
