Serial Numbers Losing Zeros? Set a Fixed-Width Format

For four-digit serial numbers in LightBurn, select Serial Number text mode and use 0dddd. The initial zero enables padding; the four decimal characters define the width. Preview the actual values before producing an X1S Pro panel. Typing ordinary numeric text or adding zeros to a spreadsheet display does not establish the laser output.

A February 19, 2026 LightBurn user question describes needing identifiers from 0001 through 0023 while seeing unpadded numbers. The current formatting reference documents the padding syntax. Its separate warning about values exceeding the chosen width matters just as much: leading digits can be lost.

Make the rollover visible

Create a small proof containing the intended font, prefix if any, and the same available space as the real plate. In the installed supported LightBurn workflow, set the serial format, then inspect Current values 1, 9, 10, and 23. Expected four-digit results are 0001, 0009, 0010, and 0023. Check rendered output rather than counting characters in the expression.

For a hypothetical order of 23 plates, keep a separate list of expected identifiers. Mark each accepted physical plate against that list. A correct-looking 0017 on two plates is still a failed sequence. If the customer requests replacement plate 0017, handle that as a recorded replacement rather than silently advancing the next production identifier.

Keep format, position, and job state separate

Fixed digit count does not guarantee identical printed width. A proportional font can make 1111 narrower than 8888. Align using the approved reference point and compare both strings if they may occur in the order. When width limiting changes letter size, also inspect vertical anchoring of variable text; that check solves a different problem from zero-padding.

Before an offline run, confirm what was captured at export. A static file may contain already-resolved identifiers rather than a live counter. Keep the editable source and verify the difference between a project and an offline job so that reopening a familiar filename does not substitute for checking its contents.

Can I use four digits if the order will eventually exceed 9999?

Choose a wider agreed identifier now, or define an explicit series change with the customer. Do not assume the formatter will automatically expand beyond its specified width. Test the largest planned value before approving the scheme.

Why are the zeros correct on screen but missing in my exported file?

Compare the exact exported file with its source, text mode, and current counter state. If an earlier spreadsheet or text conversion removed zeros, repair that input. If the source is correct, repeat a tiny export and inspect it in the receiving application before replacing the production job.
